Osgood Perkins shot the film in two formats. Cinematographer Andrés Arochi put the 1970s passages on Cooke lenses and an Arri 35mm body at a 4:3 ratio, and the 1990s material on an Alexa Mini LF at 2.39. A narrow frame therefore means you are in the past, a reading key rather than decoration, and the cue disappears on a cropped stream. The prologue cuts the killer off at the neck, keeping his face out of frame. Arochi traces the framing to a child’s eye level, where you see the space between adults, not faces. Nicolas Cage has said he built the character as neither male nor female, starting from a memory of his mother’s face covered in white cold cream when he was two. Neon kept Cage out of the trailers entirely. A Los Angeles billboard carried a phone number that played the killer’s voice to callers. The film cost 10 million dollars and took 128 million worldwide. A good fit if you accept waiting a long time for a clear look at the killer and read the narrowing frame as plot information. Not for viewers who want the case solved by evidence; the answer arrives from Harker’s own household, and harm to children is implied throughout.
