Love Hurts

A Mexican love story. Renata is the daughter of a wealthy family. Ulises lives in another part of the city; his family works at a market and he draws. They meet in a shopping centre. The relationship begins and both hide it from their families. Renata's sister and her circle openly look down on Ulises; in his neighbourhood similar things are said about her. From there the film is about two worlds colliding: two lives in the same city that never enter each other. School, language, clothes and money show themselves in every scene. What the narrative is interested in is not love but class: the problem between the two is not their feelings but how the people around them react. The ending is hard and involves violence; what happens will not be written here. Martha Higareda plays Renata and Luis Fernando Peña plays Ulises. Ximena Sariñana is in the cast, and some of the music is hers. Fernando Sariñana directed. In Mexico it was taken as an important film for its generation and was discussed among young people for a long time. Who it is for: anyone who likes young love stories and drama built on social class. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a happy ending; the film does not come near one.
