Love Is Overrated

Anis is in his thirties and convinced he is incapable of attaching to anyone. Three years have passed since he lost his closest friend Isma, and he has built his life since then out of routine, postponement and avoided contact. The film follows one attempt to step outside that. Mourad Winter wrote and directed it from his own first novel, and that is what separates it from the standard romantic comedy: the thing at the centre is grief rather than love, and the man's disbelief in relationships plays as a defence rather than a personality. Hakim Jemili and Laura Felpin take the leads. It opened in France on 23 April 2025 and picked up a special mention at the Alpe d'Huez comedy film festival that year. Its flaw is the genre itself. For all the feeling underneath, the shape is predictable, the supporting characters run on one trait each, and the ending ties everything off far too neatly. Who it is for: fans of French romantic comedy. Who it is not for: anyone waiting for the formula to break.
