Love on a Diet

Mini's boyfriend went to Japan to study piano, and the two of them promised to meet at a set place ten years later. Over those ten years Mini ate her way through the loneliness and put on a great deal of weight. He does not even recognise her. In the same city, a fellow Hong Konger in the same condition, a salesman nicknamed Fatso, offers to help: they will lose the weight together and she will keep her promise. But the thinner they get, the more the real question becomes who is going back to whom. Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai directed it together. Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng star, both playing the whole film in heavy prosthetic suits and makeup. Ninety-four minutes. It is a comedy built on appearance, and the feeling it actually leaves you with is shame.
