Love on the Run

Antoine Doinel is getting divorced, works at a printer's and is with Sabine, who sells records. At the same time he runs into Colette, his first love, on a train, and she has read the autobiographical novel he wrote. The film brings every woman from his past back on stage. François Truffaut made it as the fifth and last part of the Doinel series, and a substantial portion is assembled from footage taken out of the previous four films, with the new scenes tied to those pieces. Jean-Pierre Léaud had been playing the part for twenty years, and the series is among the rare cases in film history of one actor carrying the same character from childhood into his thirties. Truffaut later said he was not satisfied with it. Who it is for: anyone who followed the Doinel series and viewers who love Truffaut. Who it is not for: newcomers, since the film leans entirely on the past.
