Antoine Doinel is married, a father, and supposedly settled. Truffaut spends this fourth Doinel film testing whether settling is something Antoine can actually do, or whether he will always need to punch a hole in any life that holds still. Jean-Pierre Leaud is no longer playing a charming boy here. He is playing a grown man who exports his restlessness into someone else's life, and the film declines to excuse him for it. The courtyard neighbours give the whole thing an almost farcical lightness, which makes it easy to miss how much Christine is quietly paying for the comedy.
