Love & Revolution

Seville, 1977. Franco is dead but the laws remain; homosexuality is still a crime and people are detained under it. Reme is a traditional housewife. Her son Miguel paints and does not hide himself. One day he goes to a meeting; a group is working to have the law repealed. The meeting is held in a church building, with the priest's permission, and nobody finds it strange. Reme follows her son. First she listens. Then she stays. Before long she is the most active person there. Alejandro Marín directs. Ana Wagener plays Reme and Omar Banana plays Miguel; Alba Flores is in the cast. It is a Spanish production. It was shot in Barcelona and Seville and the production finished in November 2022. Its ground is real; part of the first movement in Andalusia organised within church circles, and that detail is the film's starting point. The matter it treats is a mother changing sides; the film shows it as a change of habit rather than a moment of enlightenment. Ana Wagener's performance carries the picture and the character lectures nowhere. The narrative builds the period through institutions rather than décor; the police, the church and the court are shown directly. Its last section ties into a march and the narrative gathers itself there. Its limit is structure; the narrative proceeds close to a shape and some supporting characters are functional. Who it is for: viewers who like Spanish period drama and narratives of social movements. Who it is not for: the shape is familiar, the emotional steering high, and the ending too tidy.
