Lucifer

Falling from heaven to hell, Lucifer passes through an earthly paradise: a village in Mexico where old Lupita lives with her granddaughter Maria. Lupita’s brother Emanuel pretends to be paralysed so that he can drink and gamble while the two women tend the sheep. Lucifer senses his chance and plays the miraculous healer. He makes Emanuel walk again, seduces Maria and shakes Lupita’s faith. As the film has it he brought no bad luck; he only lit up the line between good and evil where none had been before. The account gives the village on location and with local players. Its visual construction is unusual: the frame is circular. Gabino Rodriguez plays the lead in Gust Van den Berghe’s hundred and eight minute film, completed in 2014.
