What Lucky Star Is About

Rafael is in his forties, a butcher, and alone. One night on the street he pulls Marina away from her boyfriend Daniel, who is beating her. Marina is pregnant and has nowhere to go, and Rafael takes her home. They marry, raise the child together, and the household works in a way neither of them expected. Years later Daniel turns up at the door. Rafael lets him in too. What the film is really about starts here: a man's refusal to be jealous, how far he can carry it, and what it costs him. Ricardo Franco directs the Spanish film; ninety-five minutes, with Antonio Resines as Rafael, Maribel Verdú as Marina and Jordi Mollà as Daniel. It was named best film at the Goyas in 1998, and Franco died shortly after collecting the award.
