What Lust for Life Is About

The life of Vincent van Gogh, from his beginnings as a lay preacher in Holland to a life given over entirely to painting in France, told through his brother Theo’s support and his corrosive friendship with Paul Gauguin. The film hides none of the failure, the poverty or the attacks that arrive more and more often. Vincente Minnelli’s real invention is visual: he takes the palette straight from the canvases and frames the fields, the cafés and the sky the way the painter saw them. Adapted from Irving Stone’s novel, with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh and Anthony Quinn as Gauguin.
