Luxembourg, Luxembourg

Luxembourg, Luxembourg, directed by Antonio Lukich, follows twin brothers abandoned by their father at age five who learn years later of his death in Luxembourg; the twin roles are played by real life twins Amil and Ramil Nasirov, members of the band Kurgan and Aggregat. The film had its world premiere in the Orizzonti section of the 79th Venice Film Festival in 2022, nominated for the Orizzonti Best Film award though it didn't win, and also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival that year. Production was directly affected by Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022; the crew learned of their Venice selection only days before the invasion started and was scattered by the war, with some members fleeing the country and others going to the front. Lukich took part in Venice's "Ukrainian Day" solidarity event on September 8, 2022. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Ukrainian film starring real life twin brothers, completed and premiered at Venice despite the crew being scattered by Russia's invasion. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a film with a calm, war-free production process, since this one's making was directly shadowed by the war.
