M. C. Escher: Journey to Infinity

The documentary gives the Dutch artist M. C. Escher in his own sentences. His diaries, his letters and the texts of his lectures are read out; nobody else comments. His years in Italy, the patterns he saw at the Alhambra, his odd closeness to mathematicians and his idea of infinity come in turn. The works are taken apart one by one on screen. In Robin Lutz's Dutch documentary, Escher's words are read by Stephen Fry. His sons George and Jan Escher speak as well. The telling does not declare the artist a genius; it shows a man who long considered himself a failure and said he understood no mathematics. Graham Nash talks about Escher's influence from the side of music.
