What Mack the Knife - Brecht's Threepenny Film Is About
After The Threepenny Opera becomes a phenomenon on stage, the film industry comes after Bertolt Brecht. Brecht has no intention of playing by their rules, and the Threepenny Film he has in mind is hard, political and entirely uncompromising. The deal falls apart, the argument ends up in court, and the film Brecht wanted is never made. Joachim Lang builds the picture by imagining that unmade film: the real events, Brecht's own draft and the songs are folded into one another, and it moves constantly between screen and stage. Lars Eidinger plays Brecht, Tobias Moretti plays Mack the Knife. It is a reminder that the fight between an artist and an industry still starts in the same place.
