What John Cranko Is About
John Cranko was a choreographer. While he was working in London he was taken to court. The reason was that he was gay. At that time it counted as a crime. Under that pressure Cranko left the city. In 1961 he came to Stuttgart. In Germany he took charge of a small company. Before long he carried it somewhere else entirely. The work he made began to be talked about worldwide. It came to be called the Stuttgart ballet miracle. The film shows both the stage and the private life. Rehearsals, his dealings with dancers and the crises sit side by side. Cranko died in 1973 at the age of forty five. The dancers in the film are played by the Stuttgart company of today. Sam Riley takes the title role in the hundred and twenty eight minute film, a German production Joachim Lang finished in 2024.
