What Mademoiselle Chambon Is About
Jean lays bricks for a living, works with his hands, and has a quiet life with his wife and son. Collecting the boy from school one day, he meets his teacher, Véronique Chambon. She is new to the town, does not plan to stay, and plays the violin. Something starts between them that neither will name, and both of them can see what it would cost. Stéphane Brizé builds the film almost in silence: glances, pauses, sentences nobody says. It is adapted from a novel by Éric Holder and stars Vincent Lindon and Sandrine Kiberlain. The scene where she plays is the film's only detonation. Its careful refusal of melodrama is exactly what makes the ending land as hard as it does.
