The Mine

In Zonguldak the miners work day and night with safety measures that are not enough. Among these workers, whose only concern is to put bread on the table, Ilyas sees how serious the situation is; he warns his friends Nurettin and Omer and starts collecting signatures to get the union to act. But the fear of being sacked comes before solidarity, Ilyas is left alone in his struggle, and those with an interest in silence begin to threaten him. A few weeks later a large explosion takes place in the mine. The film gives the inside of the pit and the life outside it the same weight; the workers’ homes, their fears and the way they look at one another sit at the centre of the account. Cuneyt Arkin, Tarik Akan and Halil Ergun appear in Yavuz Ozkan’s ninety minute film, completed in 1978.
