Madly in Life

Alex and Noémie are talking about having a child. Just then Alex's mother Suzanne is diagnosed with semantic dementia, an irreversible illness that strips words of their meaning and changes how a person behaves. Suzanne now does what she likes, takes what she likes and sings wherever she likes. While the couple are thinking about becoming parents, they find themselves having to parent his mother instead. The first feature directed by Ann Sirot and Raphaël Balboni together, with Jo Deseure as Suzanne. The film neither asks you to pity dementia nor turns it into a joke; it manages to hold both inside the same scene, which is why it stays light despite the weight of what it is about.
