Magnetic Fields

Yorgos Goussis's 2022 Greek film follows a woman and a man who meet by chance on the ferry to an island, looking for a place to bury a metal box. What is in the box goes unsaid for a long time, and the film uses that not as a mystery but as a wait. It was shot on a very small budget with a crew of three and largely improvised. Its strength is the rhythm between the two performers; the talk sounds unplanned, and that gives it its sincerity. The island landscape is not a tourist image but an empty, windy place. The story does not progress, and for some viewers that will remain a lack. Who it's for: viewers who like Greek independent cinema and two-hander road stories. Who it's not for: anyone wanting incident, or who will find improvised dialogue scattered.
