What Magnificent Obsession Is About
The rich, careless Bob Merrick crashes his speedboat, and while the town's only resuscitator is used on him, the much-loved Dr. Phillips dies waiting for it. Full of guilt, Merrick approaches the doctor's widow Helen, and because of him she loses her sight in an accident. What follows is his attempt to pay the debt by giving himself to medicine. Sirk accepts melodrama on its own terms and hides none of the excess; colour, light and framing carry the feeling directly. One of the films that made Rock Hudson a star.
