Rock Hudson played Jordan Bick Benedict II in George Stevens's Giant: by the synopsis, the Texan ranch owner who travels to Maryland to buy a valuable stallion named War Winds, and who goes on quarrelling with his wife over her work in the migrant labour camps. In Michael Gordon's Pillow Talk he was Brad Allen, the composer who keeps a shared telephone line permanently occupied by singing the same love song. Ten years on he took Antiochus Tony Wilson, the handsome Malibu painter, in John Frankenheimer's Seconds, and David Sterritt, writing for Criterion, counts it the most deeply felt performance of his career. The Company in that film stages a fake death for a heavy fee, substituting an unidentified corpse. He appears in five of Douglas Sirk's films here, All That Heaven Allows among them.
