Pillow Talk

An interior designer and a composer forced to share a telephone line argue constantly. When he meets her he introduces himself as someone else. The film turns split screen into a comic instrument: the two are placed in the same frame in separate rooms, apparently looking at each other. The narrative also takes seriously the part where she realises she has been fooled and does not forgive it cheaply. Michael Gordon directed, with Doris Day and Rock Hudson in the first film they made together. It won an Oscar for its screenplay. Who it's for: those who like classic American romantic comedy. Who it's not for: viewers who find gender roles handled in the language of the period uncomfortable.
