What An Act of Murder Is About
Judge Calvin Cooke is known for applying the law to the letter: no mitigating circumstances, always the full sentence. Then his wife is given a diagnosis with no recovery at the end of it, and for the first time the man has to test his own standard on his own life. What he decides leaves him alive and sitting in the defendant’s chair, and the trial becomes an argument over whether an act of mercy can be called murder. Michael Gordon adapted Ernst Lothar’s novel and put euthanasia openly on screen as early as 1948, with Fredric March as the judge and Florence Eldridge as his wife.
