Boys' Night Out

Four friends are getting on towards middle age. Three are married, one is a bachelor. They are tired of taking the same train home to the same house every evening. They decide to rent a flat between them and to come to an arrangement with a young woman named Kathy. There is something Kathy has not told them: she is a sociology student and these men are her research. Kim Novak and James Garner take the leads in Michael Gordon's comedy, with Tony Randall also in the cast. The joke is on the men: none of the four actually does anything, they only talk as though they do, and Kathy writes it down. The pattern belongs to the mildly naughty comedy wave of the sixties; from here the limits look quite cautious.
