Woman in Hiding

Deborah, the daughter of a mill-owning family, is dead as far as the world knows, killed in a car accident. In fact she is alive and in hiding: she has found out who the man she just married really is, and what the accident actually was. Moving from hotel to hotel under another name, she is recognised by a soldier back from the war. Everything after that turns on whether she can trust him, and on who would believe her if she did. The tension comes not from pursuit but from the certainty that nobody will take her word: her husband is respectable and she is officially dead. Ida Lupino plays that helplessness without tipping into hysteria, a balance not easily found in those years. Michael Gordon uses dark hotel rooms and bus terminals as standard noir furniture. Lupino was starting to direct her own films around this same time.
