What Something of Value Is About
As the Mau Mau uprising tears Kenya apart, two men who grew up together find themselves on opposite sides: Kimani, and Peter, a British settler. Each is committed to his own cause and each wants a more moderate road, and rage, colonial arrogance and escalating violence on both sides make that impossible. Richard Brooks adapted the film from Robert Ruark’s novel. What is argued about now is the point of view: the narration is built from the settler’s side, and its drawing of the African characters has been heavily criticised.
