What Mahana Is About

On the east coast of New Zealand in the early sixties, two Maori shearing families, the Mahanas and the Poatas, are enemies in the sheds and in their own hearts. Simeon, fourteen, is the youngest son of a youngest son, and he starts questioning the rules laid down by his grandfather Tamihana, the patriarch. The further he gets into the truth behind the feud, the more he risks his own prospects and the balance of a tightly bound community. Lee Tamahori adapted Witi Ihimaera's novel Bulibasha, and the film showed at Berlin under the title The Patriarch.
