What Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara Is About
The memory of a retired professor, Uttam Chaudhary, starts coming apart. First there is forgetfulness, then something heavier, and his daughter moves back in to look after him. As his mind travels backwards he becomes stuck on a scene from his childhood and comes to believe that he killed Gandhi. A psychiatrist tries to free him from that conviction by staging a mock trial. Jahnu Barua's film takes on dementia more directly than Indian cinema usually does. Anupam Kher plays Uttam and also produced the film; Urmila Matondkar plays his daughter. The question of how much of Gandhi's thinking is still alive in present-day India stays there in the background throughout.
