Malice

While rapes are occurring on a university campus, an administrator who rents out a room becomes friends with the surgeon who takes it. His wife is taken to hospital and an operation goes badly. From there the film turns into something else entirely, and the campus thriller of the first half is deliberately used as misdirection. The narrative aims to surprise twice, and the second turn is sounder than the first. Harold Becker directed, with Aaron Sorkin among the writers. Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman and Bill Pullman lead. Before watching: there is a well-known scene of medical negligence, and the surgery and hospital sequences are shown plainly. The rape thread is resolved in the narrative but treated lightly in emotional terms.
