Édith Le Merdy What Man Bites Dog Is About
Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde's 1992 film follows a documentary crew filming a serial killer. The crew is slowly drawn into the killings. The viewer's position is put in question. The film uses the mock documentary form; the narrative erases the line between watching violence and taking part. It is a Belgian production shot in black and white. The directors also act in it. It was awarded at Cannes. Who it's for: almost nobody. Who it's not for: viewers who cannot take a long scene of gang rape and violence against children; the film shows them directly.
