What Man from Reno Is About
Outside San Francisco an ageing sheriff hits a man who walks into the road on a foggy night, and the man disappears. At the same time Aki Akahori, a Japanese mystery novelist, abandons her book tour and hides in a hotel in the city. There she meets a man who says he is from Reno. The next day he is gone, leaving a suitcase and a great many questions. The two stories move toward each other, and the novelist finds herself inside the kind of case she writes. Dave Boyle directs, in English and Japanese, with Ayako Fujitani as Aki and Pepe Serna as the sheriff. A hundred and eleven minutes. It builds the noir shape across two languages and two countries, and is far more interested in identity than in violence.
