What Man in the Wilderness Is About
In the early 1800s a party of fur trappers racing the winter loses its guide, Zachary Bass, to a bear. They leave him behind to die. He does not die; he gets up with his wounds, learns to feed and warm himself, and goes after them. The story comes from a real event, the survival of Hugh Glass, mauled by a bear and abandoned in 1823, the same case behind The Revenant. This 1971 version leans on silence rather than spectacle and does not arrive where the revenge setup promises. Richard Harris leads, with John Huston as the head of the expedition.
