What Man of the West Is About
A man who has left a criminal past behind is stranded off a train and runs into his old gang, and has to pretend. Anthony Mann builds it as a confrontation rather than an escape: he is forced back into who he was and discovers how easy the return is. Gary Cooper is not a hero here but a man carrying shame. The leader of the gang is nearly a father figure, and the perversity in that gives the film an uncomfortable depth. The violence is hard for its period.
