What Mandalay Is About
Abandoned in Rangoon by the gunrunner she loves, Tanya Borodoff is left to work for Nick, who owns the club, and there she becomes the house hostess known as Spot White. With the money she gets out of him she changes her name and boards a steamer for Mandalay, trying to leave the past behind, and on board she runs into both a drunken doctor and the man who sold her. Michael Curtiz’s sixty five minute Warner production is one of the films made just before the censorship rules tightened, and it neither rescues its heroine nor condemns her. Kay Francis, Ricardo Cortez, Warner Oland and Lyle Talbot star, and the picture opened on 10 February 1934.
