Cate Blanchett becomes thirteen different people here: a homeless man, a schoolteacher, a broker, a puppeteer, a newsreader, a woman delivering a eulogy. None of the words are theirs. Every line is lifted from artists' manifestos, from Futurism and Dada through Situationism to Dogme 95. Julian Rosefeldt made it first as a thirteen-screen installation and then cut it into a single film. The wager is that a century-old call to burn everything down sounds either absurd or uncomfortably current once somebody says it over breakfast.
