What Manny Is About
Manny Pacquiao grew up poor in the Philippines and first stepped into a ring at sixteen weighing forty-five kilos, with no ambition beyond feeding his family. Years later, a country of a hundred million stopped whatever it was doing whenever he fought. The documentary covers that rise, his relationship with his trainer Freddie Roach, and his entry into politics in 2010. Leon Gast and Ryan Moore directed it, Liam Neeson narrates, and it draws on Pacquiao's own home video. It is a boxing documentary and equally a documentary about a country looking for a hero. Made in 2014, it does not reach the senate seat, the presidential run, or the controversies that came with them.
