Raffaella Rea What Manuel Is About
Manuel turns eighteen and leaves the children's institute with no family waiting for him. His mother is in prison and wants to start everything again, and from the first day his new freedom is tied up in her situation. Dario Albertini's 2018 film does not speed anything up; it shows the time a young man spends waiting, walking around and failing to decide, exactly as it is. The setting is not decoration but part of his condition: marginal, empty, closed for the season. What interests the film is not the heroism of a coming of age story but the daily arithmetic of somebody with nobody behind him.
