What Manuscripts Don't Burn Is About
Mohammad Rasoulof's film starts from a real and failed plan in Iran in the mid 1990s to kill a group of writers and intellectuals together on a bus. The narrative runs from two sides at once: the writers placed under surveillance because of an unpublished manuscript describing that episode, and the two men assigned to deal with it. The film shows the perpetrators not as monsters but as people doing a job, with families and worries of their own, and that is the genuinely disturbing part of it. Banned from making films in Iran, Rasoulof shot this clandestinely, and some of the crew are left out of the credits for their own safety. It played in Un Certain Regard at Cannes.
