What Margaret's Museum Is About
In a town where half the men die down the coal pit, Margaret MacNeil is content living on her own. Then she meets Neil Currie: a dishwasher who plays the bagpipes, speaks his own language and says what he thinks. A real bond forms between them, but no life in that town is separate from the pit, and whatever anyone does the shadow does not lift. The film tells mining not as a trade but as a fate that has settled over a whole community, and it does not hide its anger. The end of the account shows how the woman carries that anger. It was adapted from a novel. Helena Bonham Carter plays the lead in Mort Ransen’s hundred and fourteen minute Canadian film, completed in 1995.
