Marmalade

In prison, Baron tells his cellmate Otis how he robbed a bank: to pay for his sick mother's medicine he met a woman called Marmalade, and the plan was hers. The more he tells it the more colourful it becomes, and the two men start planning an escape together. In his first film Keir O'Donnell leaves whether you can trust the narrator unresolved throughout; the scenes we see are not the truth but Baron's version, because they come out of his mouth. Joe Keery and Camila Morrone star. It begins like a romantic crime comedy and inverts its own structure at the end. Whether the film works depends entirely on that last section, and audiences split there. Who it is for: viewers interested in games with narration and small-scale crime comedy. Who it is not for: anyone who sees the twist coming, since the film then feels long.
