Marona's Fantastic Tale

Anca Damian's animated film tells a dog's life in her own voice. Marona is fatally injured in the street and looks back in her final moments: the rubbish tip where she was born, then an acrobat, a construction worker and finally a family, each taking her in turn. Her name changes with every owner. The most striking thing about it is the design: each section is drawn in a different graphic language, and the people appear as the dog perceives them, in shapes and proportions that are not realistic. The telling is emotional without exalting the owners; the humans are permanently absorbed in their own affairs, which makes Marona's unconditional attachment painful beside them. It is a Romanian, French and Belgian co-production. Who it's for: viewers who like art animation made for an adult audience. Who it's not for: anyone planning to watch with children; the film opens with a death and carries the sadness to the end.
