Crulic: The Path to Beyond

The documentary tells the story of Claudiu Crulic, a thirty three year old Romanian man. Crulic was accused of stealing a judge’s wallet in Poland and was taken to the detention centre in Krakow. He denied the charge and said he had been in another country at the time, but nobody listened. On the day of his arrest he began a hunger strike, asking to meet someone from the Romanian consulate. Neither the Polish authorities nor the officials of his own country answered that request. Crulic died in prison and his death became a matter between the two countries. The film tells his story through animation, using hand drawn passages together with animated photographs. The narrator is Crulic himself, given voice by Vlad Ivanov. Anca Damian’s seventy three minute film, a joint Polish and Romanian production, was completed in 2011.
