What Mary, Queen of Scots Is About
Mary Stuart was declared Queen of Scotland at six days old and became the last Catholic monarch of Scotland. She grew up in France, came back to a divided country, and lost the throne after two marriages and a rebellion. When she fled to England her cousin Elizabeth imprisoned her; nineteen years later she was executed, and with that the last threat to Elizabeth's throne was gone. Charles Jarrott's film sets the two queens against each other. The two never met in life; the film adds those meetings as invention. Vanessa Redgrave plays Mary and Glenda Jackson plays Elizabeth.
