What The Littlest Horse Thieves Is About
The owner of a Yorkshire coal mine decides to mechanise in order to raise his profits. With that decision the pit ponies working underground are put down for destruction. Three children make a plan to steal them and keep them safe. When they are caught, the decision falls to the mine owners and the miners: what is the right thing. The film does not present what the children did as mischief; it builds it as a matter of conscience. What mechanisation means at once for people and for animals lies under the account. Mining life at the turn of the century makes up the ground of the story. Alastair Sim and Peter Barkworth appear in Charles Jarrott’s hundred and four minute American production, completed in 1976.
