What Matango Is About
Seven people on a yacht are caught in a storm and wash up on a deserted island. There is no food, only a fungus covering everything, and notes left on an abandoned ship about what eating it does. As the hunger grows the group comes apart, and the real horror turns out to be what the survivors do to one another rather than the mushrooms. Ishiro Honda, who also made Godzilla, delivers something far bleaker than Toho's monster tradition would suggest. It comes from a 1907 story by William Hope Hodgson.
