A girl is found in shock in the New Mexico desert, unable to speak. The police work out that the tracks do not belong to an animal. The film withholds its creatures for a long time and builds its first section as an investigation: casts, sounds, a laboratory. The narrative names nuclear testing as the cause directly, and became a source for much of the genre that followed. Gordon Douglas directed. It was shot in black and white with the giant ants built mechanically. Who it's for: those who like the science fiction horror of the nineteen-fifties. Who it's not for: viewers expecting current effects; the creatures plainly look mechanical.
