What Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women Is About
The film describes a village in the future where, after generations of killing girl children and of dowry deaths, not one woman is left. Ramcharan, the village elder, finds Kalki in a neighbouring village and, after negotiating with her father, marries her to all five of his sons at once. What follows is a chain of coercion committed against her; the film does not avoid showing it and does not invite the viewer to enjoy it either. Manish Jha's 2003 film is not a documentary but a deliberately constructed dystopia, and its starting point is a real imbalance in the sex ratio in India. It won the international critics' prize at Venice. It was shot in a village in Madhya Pradesh in twenty nine days.
