Kyrre Haugen Sydness What Max Manus: Man of War Is About
Max Manus returns from the Winter War, and when Germany occupies Norway he joins the resistance and is trained to mine German shipping in Oslo harbour. What the film is actually about is not the operations but the waiting between them: hiding, changing identities, losing friends, not sleeping. Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning made it from the real events and do not skip the drinking and trauma of Manus's postwar years. Aksel Hennie leads. It was among the most expensive Norwegian productions to that point and was extraordinarily well attended at home. The sabotage is kept realistic and the underwater sections are the tensest part. Who it is for: viewers who like Second World War resistance stories and Scandinavian war films. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a celebration of heroism, since the cost is always in front.
