What McVicar Is About

John McVicar made his name on armed robberies in London in the sixties, was caught, and put in the special wing of Durham Prison. Inside he thinks about nothing but getting out. He and Wally Probyn go through the wall. McVicar escapes and is hunted for more than two years, named the country's most wanted man. His wife Sheila and his son Russell wait outside. In the end he is caught and goes back in. The second time inside he does something different: he starts to read. Tom Clegg directs the British film; a hundred and twelve minutes, with Roger Daltrey as McVicar, singing the soundtrack as well. The real John McVicar took a University of London degree in prison, was released in 1978 and became a writer; the story here comes from his own book.
