What Medal of Honor Is About
Ion, a seventy five year old pensioner, learns one day that he has been given a medal for an act of heroism in the Second World War; he does not remember doing any such thing, and the medal has come through an error in the records. He wears it all the same and is respected for the first time in his life; he uses it as an opening to reach the son in Canada he has not spoken to for years and to get to know his grandson. But when the state notices its mistake and the return of the medal comes up, the man has to defend his own worth inside the bureaucracy. In Călin Peter Netzer’s hundred and four minute Romanian film Victor Rebengiuc plays Ion, and the former president Ion Iliescu appears as himself. It was completed in 2010.
