What Mercury 13 Is About

In 1960 a group of American women pilots took the same tests NASA had given the Mercury 7 astronauts a year earlier. Thirteen passed, some of them outperforming the men. Then the programme was stopped and the women were asked to step aside, and only men were sent into space. The reason was never their ability. It was the rule of the day. David Sington and Heather Walsh co-directed this documentary, cutting archive footage together with interviews with the surviving pilots. Jerrie Cobb, Wally Funk and Myrtle Cagle tell it themselves. By the time Wally Funk finally reached space, more than sixty years had passed.
